free every instrument

from recordings & lyrics by Peter D'Elia by Peter D'Elia

about

too many instruments are kept in hiding
like all the bicycles that don't go riding
they fall apart if they just sit around
they all are lost until the day that they are found
guitars and mandolins sit up on shelves
drums and accordions can't play themselves
give that old banjo to another soul
there's someone out there who can make it rock and roll

free every instrument, free the confined
open the case and open someone's mind
don't keep an instrument forever locked away
i say the instruments should all come out and play

it's time to give some thanks for all the giving
you gave me what i play and how i'm living
it's like my roots were laid in some new ground
the same old instrument but such a different sound
in every string there is a story to tell
that passes on its dna from cell to cell
someday i'll plant them in some other soil
like all the bicycles that finally get their oil

free every instrument, free the confined
open the case and open someone's mind
don't keep an instrument forever locked away
i say the instruments should all come out and play
